Earn While You Watch: Kick Introduces New Currency for Viewers

Kick Co-founder and popular streamer Adin Ross announced that Kick is currently planning to launch its very own on-site currency. Hypothetically, you would be winning money for simply tuning into live streams.

This move is likely a play from the platform to gain more traction in the streaming space and hopefully grab some of Twitch’s market share. However, Kick isn’t the first to try to take on Twitch, and this isn’t even the first time Kick has gone at their neck.

With a platform that popped up conveniently after Twitch banned gambling on stream, they’ve put Stake’s massive financial support completely behind the streaming service.

In an October 14, 2024 stream, Adin was clipped speaking about the new Kick currency, shedding some light as to what chatters can expect.

Adin stated:

“They want to come out with the ‘Kick Currency’ that I told you guys about; where basically, your viewers get paid to watch you and sh*t now. Yeah yeah yeah, they’re coming out with some cool sh*t, it’s kinda like Bits, but you can cash out. It’s really cool actually. I mean, not every viewer’s going to get paid to watch the stream… for example, I can give you a ‘Kick’ and they can cash out.”

Despite Adin’s complicated wording, it seems like the platform will give the power to the streamers themselves, choosing which chatter gets the new Kick currency. This could potentially be a great thing, but at least as of now, it seems like a feature that is likely going to be abused.

Just think, a small-time streamer with a few hundred viewers could consistently give the currency to his friend in chat, stacking up extra money.

Nonetheless, you can think of the currency as the opposite of Bits on Twitch, where you buy a set amount of bits to donate to your top favourite streamer. Instead, you’ll be the beneficiary, likely earning money through a system based on Stake’s current payment scheme, if we had to guess, but much of the details are yet to be known.

This should help Kick tremendously if it’s done right, as chatter will have a real reason to consistently tune into their favourite stream.

It really looks like Twitch has finally found a worthy competitor, unlike the dumpster fire that was Mixer a couple of years ago, and if Twitch doesn’t smarten up, they could fall from grace. With all of the negative press Twitch has gotten recently, Kick is pouncing at the perfect time.
